Artist bio

Nationality Israeli, b. 1974
Location: New York, USA

Shay Kun was born in Tel Aviv, Israel, to Hungarian parents that survived the Holocaust. His parents: Ze'ev and Heddy Kun were both also artists. Kun's first solo exhibition was in Tel Aviv at age 18. He later studied at Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem (1998), receiving his masters at Goldsmiths University of London in 2000, before going to live and work in New York City. His painstaking attention to detail and composition of fantasy landscapes on canvas are updated with contemporary pop-art motifs, out of scale and perspective. Kun's hyper-reality and postmodernism style creates a jarring utopia that has been exhibited worldwide. He inherited his style through the Holocaust influenced artworks of his parents. His mother’s paintings were utopian landscapes of an ideal world, while the paintings of his father shows a darker world falling apart. Kun also infuses elements of traditional Hudson River School images of nature, particularly those of Thomas Cole, Frederic Edwin Church and Albert Bierstadt into his unique art.
